My Opuntia just broke.

Being Opuntia, I guess it will just grow roots again quite quickly. But what I want to know is how long that would take in Sydney, Australia nearing summer? Also let me know if this is correct, the top part that broke should not be put in the sun until new roots have emerged. The bottom part can be ...

Echinocactus grusonii bendi spinusii?

Greetings from Harbin, China,

This looks like a juvenile form of Echinocactus grusonii bendi spinusii, is this right? I really like these guys, I haven't been able to find one in Sydney. If it actually is what I think it is, do you think it's worth trying to bring it back home?

It's kind of like Euphorbia cylindrofolia except that the leaves on this one is wavy. I forget the name.

I wonder if it would start to grow out of all the holes, that would be interesting.

After a closer inspection on the other side it seems like the news leaves are also affected. Looks like this plant will die soon. What do you think?

Thanks Ian. Yeah a whole group of my Lithops drank a good deal of water during that rainy day. I was really nervous about rotting, since I've read many times to never ever water them while the old leaves are withering. But all of them seem fine except for little old red. I also hear that optica 'Rub...

Excellent, thank you very much. I'll make sure to use dessicants in the container.

How long do I wait to know whether the pollenation is a success or a failure?

It might have been cooked actually, now that you've mentioned it. It's been getting strong sun during winter up to now, but I've recently moved it into a newly built greenhouse. Perhaps the combination of the increased ambient temperature and the spring sun exploded that leaf. And while making the g...

Saving pollen

I've read somewhere that pollen can be refrigerated or freezed for later use. Is this true? I would like to get pollen from the first plant below to the second, much bigger grafted plant. Do I just pull off the stamens or do I cotton swab it? Is the time difference in blooming due to the graft do yo...

Red Lithops early deflation

Is this something to worry about? I noticed a few days ago a small drop of red liquid on the now deflated leaf. Something must have pierced it. It is visible in the second picture. I just hope that it won't affect the new leaves too much, perhaps they will stay smaller. http://www.cactiguide.com/for...

I was really paranoid about pot types when I first started, but then I noticed that it didn't really make much of a difference. This could be due to my climatic conditions. Even my Pseudolithos migiurtinus is in a plastic pot, albeit a small one. I don't think my plants ever go dormant for a long ti...

Young P aselliformis

There is something wrong with my plant. The two taller ones are deflating, whereas the two smaller ones are growing quite nicely. Maybe it's getting too much sun, or it has red spider mites. It gets pretty much full sun except for around 11am-2pm peak summer. The other seedlings seems to be fine wit...

Thanks for that. I'm not too keen on grafting though, I've never tried to graft anything, let alone this tiny thing.

I'll wait until after the next growing season and watch it closely. If it starts to fail will it be too late to graft?

Red Seedling

Hello all, it's good to know that I can finally upload pictures again. I have a question about seedlings. This is the first time I've tried to grow cacti from seeds. The one pictured below is possibly E grusonii brevispinus, but I'm not sure. I didn't label them properly. Anyway, I wonder if it's su...
