259C5BCD-D732-4107-8218-79B7C9229446.jpeg Knuckle close up. Looks like a viable clump of tissue, but who knows, there’s only so much I can romance this one. Still, it’s given me a few offsets over the years that are now nice specimens in their own right. Degrafted. AD9B1261-42EB-4D1C-8B45-664D3C097...

F8A52681-3739-4193-A809-9B2C40CFBC95.jpeg Well I just pulled it out, and there were a few feeble roots, but they seem to be abandoned as soon as they start. I dug all of the dead wood out to the fresh root knuckle, which appears to maintain a number of viable nodes. Also found several hangers-on of...

Re: Copiapoa solaris first flower
Hi DWdogwood ! Thank You for the reply about the Solaris soil mix. I don’t know why I just saw your reply to my question after a year. Haha😂. So how is Your beautiful specimen doing ? I hope it’s doing well ! It’s taking a long time to root itself back to health. I pull it out of its pumice pot and...

Re: Cacti Soil Mix Question 2
I use BG C&S mix as a 20% mix with the addition of pumice and Gold Fines from my rockery, which is decomposed granite (without the path hardener!!!!!). Then from the same rockery I put in a 10% scoop of sifted top soil- aka valley dirt. (For certain things- Copiapoa cinerea for example- I use on...

Daiv, good work continuing this site. Thanks.
I don’t use it much to post anymore. Nor have I gotten on to other platforms that are popular.
But I check in once a week or so.
Copiapoa atacamensis for old times sake.

RIP James.
I always think when a longtime cactus grower passes, especially when it’s someone I learned a lot from, or just knew enough about their passion, that I aspire to be the old-timer that I looked up to when I was younger and on a quest.
The list is long.

Re: uebelmannia pectinifera and other rare cacti
Thanks Dave, duly noted. I received the two larger plants from the nursery belong to one of the guys in in the article when they first offered them on their website as tiny seedlings.
I don’t know how I conflated the v. name with eriosyzoides….
There has to be something around with that one.

Ubelmannia pectinifera v. eriocactoides -edited nn.
2 older parents and a couple of offspring.
The supposed “new taxon” published a few years ago.
It’s a nice variation, whatever it’s true distinction from the type form.

Re: Copiapoa dealbata, doing what it does best
Here’s a plant I’ve had for 30 years. The only one I’ve ever really liked as it’s stayed rounded and compact. I struggle with this species as all others I’ve acquired second hand are the elongated form that get pretty ugly. (Sorry, I’m done trying to edit photos in here, flip your phone sideways! Th...

Re: Columnars just because.
In the updated pics - is that a saguaro behind the p.weberi in the first photo? Epic update, 12 years *gives a long and impressed whistle* Yes indeed a saguaro I’ve had since 1997 when it was about a foot tall. It flowered 3 years ago. This year it hasn’t even put a new break in the apex wool. Dorm...

Re: Three little words?
As a lyricist and language arts observer I have been fascinated by word combinations for decades.
Its really easy to just say something that I trust has never been said before:
Tiger clutch accomplice.
Ceramic wave dump.
It’s fun.
Yeah, who needs an ampersand or numerals.

Re: Columnars just because. Update 12 years later
Not as big as I would have hoped but I really didn’t pot them up as much due to space constraints.
No arms on the pachy yet.
Still the few I kept are in good shape.

Re: Copiapoa solaris first flower
Soil is an issue now. Last year I noticed this solaris wasn’t fattening up from the winter. It did flower but something wasn’t right. I pulled up a little and it just came out of its pot. Upon detailed inspection I found clusters of those little tiny yellow fungus balls. Not that they harm a plant b...

Re: How to encourage fuzz on cacti?
Which particular species do you have? Some are not really known for big wool. Others are pretty reliable. In my greenhouse with 30% shading and no overhead watering there are a few standouts.
