I would guess in some ways, your tolerance for cholla is tied to what you're used to

Ferocactus seedlings grow wild in my yard all the time.

It takes certain conditions: More shade than sun, damp soil, rocks to 'hide' in, etc., but these things aren't that unusual in the Sonoran desert.

--Don't know about other habitats though.

Don't ants often bring with them plant pests (aphids, scale, et cetera)?
--Probably depends on the species of ant. I have never noticed that happening in my garden. The ants actually seem to keep the plants free of everything but ants.

This past winter, Phoenix and Tucson had a four day stretch of freezing temps with one or two nights in the teens. Yes, they grow in Las Vegas too, which gets colder because it's a thousand feet higher and farther north. I would suspect that if they won't grow in Florida, it would be something else...
