Re: I Gave Myself a Dioscorea Elephantipes for my Birthday

This one is one of my mind boggling one's. But after almost 2years I am starting to figure it out. When I bought it, it looked the same as it does now except the center leaves are a little bigger. I have read not to water until the 2 old leaves are dried up. So that's what i am doing. The last time ...

Re: Growing Lithops and Other Difficult Mesembs

I think this thread is going to be a wealth of information for me. The one in the yellow pot I had for a year and a half, after doing some research, I read NOT to water until old leaves are gone. It's been almost a year since I watered that one. All 4 leaves were ferm the entire time until the last ...

Re: I Gave Myself a Dioscorea Elephantipes for my Birthday

Yep, most of our succulent plants are adapted to grow in a narrow range of very specific conditions (either sections of the Namib OR the Atacama OR the Texas scrub OR whatever) but these are more generalist in nature, especially for the first few years. I haven't had any more than 10 years, but it ...

Re: I Gave Myself a Dioscorea Elephantipes for my Birthday

Yep, that's my experience too--different plants take different dormancies and these appear to be (at least sometimes) pre-programmed without regard to the season or day length, especially in the first 3 or 4 years of growth. This seems to be because these plants grow in very different circumstances...

Re: New to Cacti & Succulents- Need some help

For adding grit to soil I been using half and half, Cati/citrus soil and... Ok this might sound weird but a clay based oil dry. It doesn't clump like kitty litter or turn muddy, and super cheap. Any thoughts on this??

Re: Cactus greenhouses in colder zones (6, 5, 4, etc)

I live in zone 4 from my experience moisture, not cold is the biggest killer of cactus in winter. For example, mid Winter thaw's if grown outdoors. If you keep them dry I am sure you would have success. For example, I had 2 beeked yuccas. They were in my unheated garage all winter with temps below 0...

Re: Got Tiny Little Guys Growing...Now what?

Keep in mind when growing cactus seeds, in the wild they grow underneath other larger shrubs and small trees. Direct sun will cook them. I would take the top off of the planter but that's all. Set them on a windowsill out of direct sun and enjoy your little ones. When there little, I wouldn't repot ...

Re: I Gave Myself a Dioscorea Elephantipes for my Birthday

These plants grow from seed extremely easy. It funny because they look exactly like maple seeds. I have 12 I grew from seed. 8 in a larger pot. With the exact same care and conditions those 8 grow and go dormant at different times. I call them my little weirdos. From my experience there's no reason ...

Babytoes help

This babytoes plant is about 3 year's old. I have been treating it similar to a lithop,"with a little more water". In winter it was a lot thicker. In early spring it shed a lot of it's "toes". It's in a east window and gets at least 6 hrs of morning direct sun. I haven't watered ...
