Re: Extremely important that I don't kill these - what are they?

just as a side note, I concur 100% with Hallow about the IDs. I cannot provide a solid ID on the agave ... NO idea what species it is (so many of them look alike to me), so I can't tell you whether or not it will survive a winter outside ... some species will, and some species won't. it also depend...

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.

I noticed a lot of dessert plants do that. I have a "sheep eater" plant that's very sensitive to when it gets watered. I keep that one outside in the summer. Every time we get rain it goes through a huge growth spurt. Can practly watch it grow for 3or4 days. After that it just sits there d...

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.

I saw another posting about pinching these guys. Never really thought about it until I saw the picture of the little one you posted with the multiple smaller stems. I usually get one long one. I was thinking maybe it comes with age but the one you have is about the same size as mine. Hhhhhmmmm. I wa...

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.

The one with the most leaves on are actually on a windowsill on a north facing window. It doesn't look bad but I had the best results with them outside on a covered porch. Or windowsill with a shaded southern exposure. If you live in a climate with intense sun I would definitely keep it under some s...

Re: Extremely important that I don't kill these - what are they?

I am not sure about the cacti in the first 2 pictures, to add what was already mentioned what type of soil is under the rocks? The bottom picture are 2 totally different plants. The larger one is a agave, the other two are a hens n chicks type of plant. I would sperate the two different types. Both ...

Winter transition advise needed

Most of my hardy"ish" cacti and succulents have been outdoors all summer. It's starting to cool down here and the fall ,wet season is coming soon. Do I bring them in before it cools down anymore? In the past I waited until the night time lows averaged around 50°f. Is that ok since because ...

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.

Here's my little weirdos. The top 2 pictures are of the youngest ones, starting there second season grown in a typical potting mix but not watered often. The group together is young too in a typical potting mix. The one growing is in a north facing window. And in it's 3rd season in a course potting ...

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.

Todays update I have had this plant for 2 weeks now. The last pictures I took and posted were Sunday. This is today, Tuesday. I'm giving up the idea that the growth will be short. These stems are reaching for the sun. I watered it deeper today and will now let it dry out for 5 days. It is Still get...

Re: Growing from seed outdoors

Having cold and wet springs here too I been fighting with early spring rot as well. Some I been digging up and putting them in my garage until they start to pump out a little then putting them outdoors. That seems to work but digging them up is a real pain in the hands and backside. LoL. Plants prob...

Re: Cultivation of a Dioscorea Elephantipes.

I have read, that the bulb likes to be shaded and cooler, like growing under a tree. The vine part can take sun. In there natural habitat they go dormant in summer to avoid intense sun of the desert. To let one go dormant is the healthiest way care for this plant. Maybe if the tops are in more shade...

Re: I Gave Myself a Dioscorea Elephantipes for my Birthday

This one is one of my mind boggling one's. But after almost 2years I am starting to figure it out. When I bought it, it looked the same as it does now except the center leaves are a little bigger. I have read not to water until the 2 old leaves are dried up. So that's what i am doing. The last time...
