Re: Help with 1 please. It is a Copiapoa?
Copiapoa hypogaea, a nice small species from Chile. Don't listen to anyone who offer you "to cut" it. It has soft stem so in right conditions it will gain normal compressed shape within 1-2 years. This copiapoa is etiolated - this means it has not been receiving enough of light and has gr...

Using 6-BAP with Lanolin to induce offsets
I recently read an article on a forum wherein the author talks about his experiences inducing offsets on his cacti using a 2% w/w mix of 6-BenzylAminoPurine (BAP) in pure lanolin. I purchased 5 gms of 6-BAP from a guy in Cairns via eBay and the pure Lanolin (50gm) from Superpharmacy ( https://www.su...

Re: Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
Hi Jitesh: You would be correct. If pups grow from almost every areole, it would indicate that's its a monstrose variety. Carob: here is an example of a monstrose form of a globular cactus: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Echinocactus-grusonii-Mike-Ellis-Monstrose-grafted-cactus-plant-/254613892443 You can...

Re: Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
Imo I'd say those pups are monstrose, I have several mature e. oxygona plants and they never pupped like that, when they pup it's always from the lower areoles on the cactus and the pups don't pup themselves until they reach a greater size I think (respectfully) that you need to read up a bit about...

Re: Salvaging a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii using hydroponics
The gymno inflated to a large size and became very turgid - I guess all those roots sucking in those nutrients worked a treat :D I transferred the hydroponics container outdoors for a week to get the gymno acclimatised to our hot Perth summers and then two days ago, potted it into a coarse potting m...

Re: Doubt about stock making monstrose pup
Hi Jitesh the echinopsis oxygona is simply putting out multiple pups or offsets. This is not a monstrose variety. It is quite common for grafted cactus to create a lot of offsets, a good example of this is gymnocalycium mihanovichii grafted to hylocereus rootstock. Here is a link to a picture: https...

Pictographic Guide to watering Lithops & Growth Stages
Hi All, I'm trying to capture several stages of growth over the period of one year to act as a guide to watering the Lithops species I have grown from seed. This is what I have got so far. Just thought of sharing this idea as it may help create a more detailed understanding towards growing this wond...

Help with identifying this Lithops species
Hi, I've got this seedling that has gone through its first shedding and the resulting new leaves are quite beautiful. This seedling was a result of sowing one of those "magic box" type online offers for Lithops seed. You don't exactly know what you're getting, but there could be a few hidd...

Re: Dead as the dodo- or?
I once had a Copiapoa dealbata that had very bad scarring. I was tempted to force it to create pups so that I could start afresh. Apart from the usual spraying with a miticide (to prevent the pups from being affected), I used a 10 mm drill bit and drilled out the top most part of the cacti - this is...

Re: Salvaging a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii using hydroponics
Interesting. I have been thinking along these lines too as a last try for rescuing . A couple of points of ‘concern’ though.. The possibility of rotting of the base if the base comes in contact with standing water ( as in the pics?) and as I have understood, the roots developing in water and substr...

Re: Rooting of offsets
What I'm about to discuss is not an offset, but a cutting of a Uebelmannia pectinifera seedling. I had 3 seedlings and unfortunately due to insufficient lighting during the seedling stage ( about 6 months after germination), they started to etiolate quite severely. In order to correct this, I used a...

Salvaging a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii using hydroponics
So, the story goes like this... I had this beautiful Gymno growing in a terracotta pot for about 3 years when, after a particularly dry spell and heat stroke, it decided to just kinda give up on life. No amount of encouragement resulted in any benefit and it just sat there in a variety of soils/arti...
