Its either a Hydnophytum or a Myrmecodia. Probably the second name, I have a hard time with telling them a part unless I see both together. They are ant-plants.

Depending on who you are talking to they are the same thing. To me it looks like what I'd call tersheckii, but have saw plants that look like this when young, but grow more spines and bristles as they age and turn out looking like pasacana.

On the slim chance you have a plant of Aeonium lindsayi(sp?-I know its an Aeonium that starts with "L"), the sap from its leaves are supposed to help counteract burns from Euphorbia burns. Maybe Aloe will work also.

I doubt that this subject is not allowed is what is killing the Sclerocactus. The genus is famous for growing in cycles with beetle outbreaks. I bet under the dead plants and in other places there were young plant growing to replace the dead ones.

Byron,
I'd say Tephrocactus weberi on the first and Trichocereus tersheckii/pasacana on the second.

I'd be careful with your unknown volunteer. It sure looks like bindweed and that can be about the hardest weed I know of to get rid of.

John,
Not the Liatris, the two-tone bracted flower. It looks like a Salvia I seen out somewhere, but wasn't sure if that's what yours was.
