looking at all the pictures on line it can be either. Both flower the same and the flowers that have appeared occasionally look like either the
opuntia cochenillifera or nopalea cochenillifera

These probably came in one of those tiny terrarium things people give as gifts and these 2 survived 20 years ago.
Using the information you provided I think the second one is Austrocylindropuntia subulata, Eves Pin

Yes they are expensive but well worth the money in safety. They have 3 layers of fabric. Far superior to a heavy leather/lineman glove

I was at the California Cactus Center in Pasadena a few weeks ago and was surprised at all the 100 year and older cactus and succulents they had there.

Nothing so far has embedded itself in the surface of these gloves. I found them accidentally will looking for work gloves. The surfave is made from 3 layers as well as the side of the index finger. They are great gloves.
