I never even thought of using popsicle-style sticks until you mentioned it! That was a good idea! I like your idea on the engraving and the metal tags too, I think I will look into that further!

Hehe, for some reason, I don't think my mom will be interested in the name of the cacti when if she discovers that her 16 year old son has beer cans handy!

Well, not all of them are biodegradable, these spoons in particular were, as written on the box in big bold font were the words "Biodegradable: Safe For The Environment!", but I've found plastic spoons in my backyard from what had to have been at least 14 years ago, before the sandbox was ...

If you were to roughen the surface up just a tad bit with some fine grit sand paper, then yes, pencil would write on it!

@ Loph: I guess it would really vary per store. On the spoons that I used for this tutorial, I remember paying $2.00 for 500 of them (I got them at a Dollar General or something, since I wasn't using them for anything, I just went to a discount store). The spoons are biodegradable too (they're desig...

At first I thought it was blue, but then I found out that the plant was just covered in dust. It is actually green.

Easy DIY Identification Tags

Being a student, I often find myself finding ways to save as much money as possible. Today, while looking at the basic shape of ID tags used by many people on this site, I was reminded by the shapes of the handles of plastic silverware. Without a second thought, I ran into my kitchen, and began figu...

Three More From The "No-Flower-No-Good" Nursery

If you don't already know the story, a local nursery is giving me free cacti that have had the decorative flowers they hot-glued on them blown off. So far, the specimens that I've been coming home with have been pretty good, and today, I got three more. Two of them are unlabeled, and one of them I b...

daiv,
I was thinking of a different approach, I was thinking of removing the plant, sterilizing everything, and using it to grow an extremely sensitive plant (from seed) like an Aztekium. An enclosed biodome like that would probably actually do pretty well.

It's a little baby one (probably 4 inches tall at most), so I don't know if it's developed all of it's spines yet. There are quite a few spines, but they are hair-thin. Do you have a picture of your Claude Barr Hybrid? The nursery that I got this specimen from doesn't know much about cacti (see prev...

Pet Plants Anyone?

Apparently, these are a new "craze" in Europe. They are little cacti in an acrylic tube, with a growing medium at the bottom, and are about the size of a AA battery. You water them by soaking in water. Kind of interesting if you ask me!

Either one of which I'd be thrilled to have (a pad would be pretty neat!) :)

Ohh, you can be sure that I will (Photography is a hobby that I avidly pursue)! On another note, as of last night, my first Opuntia (an Opuntia fragilis/polyacantha "Claude Barr" hybrid) has started budding :D http://i31.tinypic.com/s2y5wp.jpg Living in Texas, I'm really...

Yes, it is on its own roots (one of the reasons I'm so excited, it's not a grafted one!!!) :D

I think that you just may be on to something! From the pictures in the Melocactus section, I think that it looks a lot like the M. azurues. But I'm not certain of that, because the spines on the top of my specimen are quite elongated.
