You are very lucky Ruth. The laws that prohibit lophophora aren't to help the cactus population. If that was the case why would it be prohibited to grow if it is so endangered of being wiped out. The root method seemed to work rather quickly. Today I found zero bugs on the plant. Usually when I take a peek, there are a few dozen walking across the tip. However, today I found none. Great advice on the root method.

CactusVeda that is a really nice clump you have there.

I do agree that this cactus is far too valuable to consume. I don't think I have the heart to cannibalize my brothers.
