thanks all. the buds are still pretty small so it may be a while. I have had this specimen for a few years but this is the first year I have put it outside for the summer.

Gymnocalycium baldianum flowers

Hi All. It looks like my Gymnocalycium baldianum is starting to grow blossoms. this is the first time for me. I would like to know if these bloom at night or in the day?

thanks for posting this allyn. I was almost ready to post a pic of mine because I could not figure it out. yours looks alot nicer than mine and bigger. they must tend toward cristate growth as mine is also this way.

hopefully i am not leading you too far astray, leave it up to the real experts here to make a positive identification but to my untrained eye I believe it looks like a Mammillaria, possibly Mammillaria rhodantha. It looks a lot like one I have.

it measures 4" across the top so maybe softball sized.

I will have to measure it but it is about the size of a rather large grapefruit. we have had it for several years now. I cannot remember how big it was when we got it.
