Re: Those darn birds

I have been growing cactus and succulents for decades and never had problems with bird, mice and other animals except for a Aztekium that was partially eaten by a bird. I had a problem with a Mammillaria tetrancistra that was moved to another area after being attached to a cat. I finally moved the p...

Re: Mammillaria tetrancistra

I live in an area that receives more rain than where these M. tetrancistra originate. I drove to an area where these plants are know to grow and did not find any plants, but found Ferrocactus and Opuntia plants. I know that the plants receive more water from the ocean air, and I water the plants mor...

Re: What is up with this?

I have several Mammillarias and one Pseudolitos miguirtinus with flowers and these plants are growing outside in Southern California. I even have some seed pods on some plants. The high is 70F and the low is 60F where I live, but the days are getting shorter. There are bees flying around and pollina...

Re: Mammillaria tetrancistra

I am thinking about watering the plants only when it rains because I live within a hundred miles of where the plants originate. The plants receive moisture from the ocean dew.

Re: The "cold"

I am growing some cactus that should not have winter rain and should move them under the covered patio. I do not like to move plants unless the weather is unusually cold or if it rains more than normal. I used to have a small heater greenhouse for tropical succulents and do not grow them anymore.

Re: The "cold"

I live in Southern California near the ocean and have very similar weather conditions as Lebanon. I do not bring any cactus inside during the winter months. I should probably cover the cactus due to the winter rainy season, but grow cactus that are sensitive to winter rain under a covered patio.

Re: My cactus is dying

I cut away the dead parts of the cactus and let the end dry up. I then place the cactus in pumice and water the plant. The plant should send out roots in time and then the cactus can be put into your potting mix.

Re: What plant do you want most, but have been unable to find?

I think that almost any cactus can be purchased online, but sending it internationally is a problem due to import restrictions.

Re: Hana's cacti

Great looking plants! I would like to have hot weather like you have, but live near the ocean and the summer temperature hardly ever gets above 90F.

Re: LONG HARD WINTER.

I have a problem in winter which is not due to cold temperatures, but due to winter rains. I have minimum temperature around 45-50F, but most of the rain falls in the winter months. I have to keep plants under a covered patio during the rainy season. I also grow plants that are from areas that have ...

Re: Windowsill and patio growing

I have been thinking about using an attachment to lower the pH of my tap water. I have heard that plants generally grow much better with slightly acidic water.

Re: Windowsill and patio growing

I feel very lucky that I am able to grow plants outside in containers, in the ground or under a covered patio and not have to bring anything inside the house. The coldest winter temperature will be around 50F near the beach in Los Angeles. I used to grow plants inside when I lived in an apartment an...

Re: Growing Cyphostemma from seed

I have grown about twenty-five Cyphostemma juttae plants from seed. I planted about 150 seeds and germinated twenty-five plants last year. The year before I only germinated one plant from 150 seeds. I spoke to a Cyphostemma grower and she said that there have been studies about germination rates and...

Mammillaria tetrancistra

I am growing Mammillaria tetrancistra outdoor in plastic pots. I live about one hundred miles from where the plants are grown in nature, but live very close to the ocean and not in the desert. I probably over water the plants, but they are still alive after two years. The plants have large flowers a...
