Re: Discocactus root issues
I very much appreciate the effort to help though. Maybe it's just one of those things that happens y'know? Like in the past some of my Stapeliads, Edithcolea especially, just randomly loose their roots with no apparent significant change to their environment. Well then if we can't find a cause I'll ...

Re: Discocactus root issues
-It's not totally exposed, it's under the eaves of the house. -Initially the shrinking wasn't concerning to me. Many new plants I buy do this. I find that if I buy from commercial growers that use a lot of organic matter and fertilizer in their soil and water more frequently their stems are very blo...

Re: Discocactus root issues
Ah so the root loss is a nutrition issue? I was thinking it was because of the nearly daily strong rains for the past few weeks or maybe it's both. I've actually increased the organic matter and soil amount for this one and some of my other plants. I only used very little for the Obregonia because I...

Re: Discocactus root issues
A bit damp yes, it's been very rainy the past two weeks.
It was in a mineral mix, the mix I use for the majority of my plants, the rest of my plants are fine though.
What would I use to sterilize? Alcohol? H2O2?

Re: Discocactus root issues
Thanks Steve!
It's a Discocactus zehntneri, apparently on the easier side of the spectrum from what I've read.
Here's some photos

Discocactus root issues
Good day! So I've had this plant for only a few months, it had been growing well, much better than I thought it would, until recently when I noticed it felt loose in it's pot and sure enough a light nudge dislodged it. So does anyone have tips helping a mature Discocactus regrow it's roots? Most of ...

Re: Cacti in the tropics
Time for a little update Here are the Coryphantha elephantidens flowers I mentioned last time, recent rains have pushed down the fluff to reveal the two flower buds. IMG20230508010651~2_copy_768x648.jpg Matucana sp. flower bud is starting to get bigger now and another one has started to grow. This s...

Re: Cacti in the tropics
The hot sunny days of the dry season has really spurred on flower development. Thelocactus setispinus An ever reliable bloomer and the sweet scent and bright colors really attract the bees. Re: Aloe? Aloiampelos?
Ah yes I meant those two varieties. Sorry I didn't specify. I only realized that there were two similar varieties after I had already responded and never got around to edit my response.

Re: Aloe? Aloiampelos?
I had considered this at one time but aside from the leaves it doesn't really have anything similar with A. ibitiensis
Oh I just remembered another species that looks similar, A. deltoideodonta, could that be it?

Aloe? Aloiampelos?
So I've had this plant for a few years now, never really did well but it's been thriving the past year since I started paying more attention to it 😅 and has started to grow 6 new offsets. I never had a solid conclusion to it's identity but now I want to know what it actually is I believe it's an Alo...

Re: Cacti in the tropics
Yup
Since the middle of last year at least one plant has been in bloom or has buds developing.
This year has been the best so far in terms of flowering. I've even been trying to produce seeds but still waiting to see if pollination was successful.

Re: Parodia? with long yellow spines
Very nice spines! Not sure about Parodia, but maybe Coleocephalocereus aureus? Interested to see what others think. Thanks Mr. Xeric! That was another species I was considering but it's not really something I would expect from a regular cactus seller. I was thinking it was a species with pretty nic...
