Re: Uprooting question
I gotta say though, these are some pretty healthy roots for a pure clay soil.

Re: Uprooting question
I would let them dry for several days to a week before potting. Yes, you can do the same with those E, grusonii (if they're in clay soil I'd strongly recommend it. The only barrier to repotting them is when the plants just get too big to handle. Thank you very much. You always give the most helpful...

Re: Frankenstein seedlings.
The quality of the photos is rather low. Would it be possible for you to take some better resolution/focus pictures so we can clearly see what's going on? To be perfectly honest I see normal seedlings on all three photographs :) The image was distorted by the plastic covering. However, it is easily...

Re: Cactus ID (echinopsis?)
Definitely a pilosocreus. I'd recommend separating them while they are still young or else the roots will be extremely tangled.

Frankenstein seedlings.
A little less than 2 months ago, i started growing some mixed seeds. One batch is really ahead with things starting to look like cacti rather than seedlings. However, the other batch grown under the same condition and a couple of weeks earluer has gone haywire. The seedlings turned into large blobs ...

Thanks!greenknight wrote:There's no problem with repotting it, go right ahead. Looks like it needs it.
Would you recommend potting immediately or letting it dry for a day or 2?
I also have a couple of medium echinocactus grusonii also sitting in large pots and clay soil. Can i do the same?

Uprooting question
So i got this lovely aloe perfoliata as a gift a while back. Now that the weather is getting warmer i'd like to tackle this project. The plant is quite large with more than a couple dozens of offsets. However it is sitting low in a huge pot. What i'd like to do is cut away the plastic pot, wash away...

Im 90% positive it's P. warassii. I have the same one and it even looks like it's from the same supplier.

Re: Gymno identification.
It's not always an easy task to pinpoint the exact species of Gymnos but it could well be one of the varieties of G. anisitsii. It could also be G. baldianum. I have sown it 2 years ago and I now have ~20 2-year old plants and they all look quite different from each other. Thanks for your reply! Th...

Re: Fertilizing
I think fertilizing depends on the species. A relatively fast growing columnar cactus or some opuntias would benefit from some fertilizer. However, with slow growing species, fertilizing won't do much. As for me i grow my cacti in a very rocky mixture with just a little top soil. In this case, i dis...

Gymno identification.
This is what i always thought was a G. Baldianum but comparing to another G. Baldianum i can see some differences. The color is lighter and the shape is taller rather than globular. The flower buds are red rather than green. Could it be just a hybrid?

Re: Is my cactus rotting?
Root rot from overwatering starts in the bottom of the pot, where the soil is saturated. This sort of thing would be from injury that occurred when it was transplanted - if it was going to rot from that, it probably would have done so already. Do keep an eye on it, but I expect it's already healed....

Re: Is my cactus rotting?
Yes, leave it for some days dry (or put some sulfur powder on the spot) and plant it into new soil and so on. If at later time things get worse and you decide to cut off all lower part of the plant it will re-root easily, this is an young plant. Looks like Pilosocereus to me. Thanks 7george! I want...

Re: Is my cactus rotting?
Could be just a scar. Is that patch soft? Unless it's mushy there, I would just leave it bare root for several days to a week and let it dry (Best to do that anyway after cleaning the roots). Check it every day, it should quickly become obvious if it's rot, it will spread and get mushier. It's plen...
