Re: O. Humifusa in Connecticut
Long time update to this old thread but I larked out the truth. Turns out that this is NOT a native wild patch of Opuntia humifusa. I found some guys blog and he proudly had a picture of himself and this cactus that he admits putting here in the early 1990's. So anybody finding this topic through in...

Re: Dormant in May?
Andy, thanks. That makes sense; I know they like it so much better when they're not in pots. You see the box that the Columbiana is sitting in? That's its new home, but I thought it wise to wait until it's growth spurt is over. Or, do you think I should re-pot now mid-growth? With the pads that far...

Re: Dormant in May?
Ah they're in pots. I personally haven't had much luck with Opuntias in a pot.
The O. columbiana pads might fatten up some more but the second one looks like it's already done growing.

Re: Dormant in May?
Sounds a bit odd to me. Have any pictures? All mine started new pads/flowers and they are coming along normally although a bit slow due the weather. But yeah no sun at all so far in May has been a bit frustrating

They're all various clones of E. baileyi except the short spine one which is E. perbellus.

Re: Purchases for the cold-hardy garden
I've had one or two E. missouriensis do that, turn real red. Probably won't make it but they are tough. I guess its just a transplanting thing, sometimes they don't like it? Many other missouriensis have done exceedingly well and I even planted some that were smaller than my pinky nail. You definite...

Re: Purchases for the cold-hardy garden
For little fuss you want Northern forms of Escobaria vivipara and missouriensis plus Echinocereus viridiflorus (did I send you any of these?). I've had real good luck so far with small forms of Echinocereus coccineus one from Taos, NM and another from Southern Colorado, I grew them from seed though....

Re: Vermont Cold-Hardy, 2014
Are you saying my pictured one is a variety from Granite, Oklahoma? Is it a very local variety from that one location? I'm beginning to see more and more varieties with a geographical name attached to them. It's true that it's rather small; I have one much larger one that's shaped like a caveman's ...

Re: Vermont Cold-Hardy, 2014
Looks great! That flower might be the Granite, OK variety I grew due to the smaller size of it, some of the others are huge. I know I'll never get tired of seeing these in bloom. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5579/14445962354_7ccc59ed0f.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5075/14346563314_24cb92786a...

Re: Vermont Cold-Hardy, 2014
It is E. viridiflorus and I imagine I sent it to you. I'm drowning with them. They are sprouting from seed freely in my garden on their own some of which are flowering already. They can flower when very small https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7394/9436027580_d81f3a17be_s.jpg Echinocereus viridiflorus b...

O. humifusa - Cape Cod
Timed it right to find some local Opuntia humifusa in full bloom at the Cape. Been awfully wet in the Northeast US since mid May so the grass was fairly lush. You could quite easily walk past them if they weren't blooming. I would have taken a hundred pictures but I freaked when I noticed huge ticks...
