As for the question of pentlandii vs. rossiana - I'm pretty sure they are just variants within the same species. "C" pentlandii seems to represent the optimum mound-forming growth type as seen mostly on slopes and in rocky places, while "rossiana" seems to represent how the same plants grow in more open exposed flats, in usually less rocky soils. I suspect they are not even real subspecies, only ecotypes. However, I can't really make a good case one way or the other.
