Mexico-San Juan Capistrano, Zacatecas, 1000m. (only in the type locality).
This strongly spined species was discovered by Alfred Lau in 1983 in the region of San Juan Capistrano in the Zacatecas and named tripugionacantha because of the three striking, strong central spines in form of a sword. And then, the description of the species was made by A.Lau himself in 1988.
